Overview
A legal organization is seeking a Litigation Attorney or Senior Litigation Attorney to advocate for the rights and interests of individuals with disabilities through civil rights class action and impact litigation, as well as other systemic advocacy efforts in Massachusetts. The Senior Litigation Attorney role requires 10 or more years of legal practice.
Responsibilities
- Lead litigation and investigations including case development, legal strategy, factual and legal research, site visits, and client development under the direction of the Legal Director.
- Represent clients in class action and impact litigation through all stages: written discovery, document review, depositions, negotiations with opposing counsel, motion practice, brief writing, in-court arguments, client management, appellate, trial, and monitoring work.
- Negotiate settlements, draft mediation statements, term sheets, and settlement agreements, and represent clients in negotiation sessions.
- Conduct client outreach and maintain relationships with disability professionals, advocates, and organizations.
- Collaborate with staff on systemic advocacy activities.
- Attend in-person meetings with colleagues, clients, opposing parties, and government officials.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records of advocacy, monitoring, investigation activities, and time spent.
- Travel throughout Massachusetts to perform job duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the organization's mission.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate and current Massachusetts bar admission or immediate eligibility for admission.
- Minimum 7 years of legal practice experience, with at least 5 years in litigation or equivalent; preference for class action and/or civil rights experience.
- Strong legal writing and in-court/negotiation advocacy skills.
- Professionalism and sound ethical judgment.
- Strong initiative, time management, follow-through, and flexibility with changing priorities and deadlines.
- Knowledge of legal principles related to impact or class action litigation.
- Commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of historically marginalized groups including people with disabilities, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, low-income populations, and incarcerated people.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to travel throughout Massachusetts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively in a language other than English such as ASL, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Mandarin, or another non-English language.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary is determined by a collectively bargained scale based on years of experience. For example, an attorney with 7-8 years of experience earns $78,200.
- Benefits include a 35-hour work week, generous vacation, retirement benefits, and dental insurance.

- Remote position requiring Massachusetts residency.
