Overview
This virtual, one-year limited term position is for a paralegal with Michigan civil litigation experience, including PIP, bodily injury, and UM/UIM work. The role supports the Michigan Staff Counsel team.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys in answering interrogatories by interviewing clients, reducing answers to writing, reviewing work with attorneys, and preparing answers in final form.
- Obtain, review, and summarize medical records at the direction of trial attorneys; arrange for medical examinations as necessary and coordinate expert review when required.
- Assist attorneys in preparing motions and researching legal points related to those motions.
- Assist attorneys in interviewing witnesses preparatory to and during trials as necessary.
- Prepare trial documents and evidence.
- Perform other legal support functions as assigned.
Physical Actions / Work Conditions
Work may be performed virtually or in an office setting and includes normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions. Duties may include:
- Sitting or standing for extended periods (up to a full work shift)
- Occasionally reaching overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping
- Occasionally moving, lifting, carrying, and placing objects and supplies weighing 0–10 pounds without assistance
- Listening to, interpreting, and differentiating auditory information (e.g., others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction
- Visually verifying and reading information; visually locating material, resources, and other objects
- Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods (up to a full work shift)
- Physical dexterity sufficient to repeatedly use hands, arms, and shoulders to operate a keyboard and other office equipment (up to a full work shift)
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- 2-year Associate’s Degree OR 3 years of experience working as a Paralegal.
- Paralegal certificate or a degree in paralegal studies or the completion of at least one year of law school.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program.
- One year experience working in a civil litigation law firm (preferred).
