Overview

This role is for an experienced in-house legal counsel within the Claims Matter Counseling (CMC) team, part of the Business Law & Compliance Property Liability practice group. The primary focus is to provide legal guidance to the Property Liability business units, especially the Claims Department, helping to manage high-exposure claims and complex coverage issues before litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and counsel to the Claims Department on issues arising during claims handling, including coverage opinions, conditional demand responses, large losses, releases, rejected tenders, multiple competing claims, and impacts of new laws or court decisions for assigned states.
  • Advise on complex claims and large losses with potential extracontractual or bad faith exposure to facilitate resolution.
  • Deliver training and education to Claims personnel on emerging legal trends, risks, and relevant legal developments.
  • Collaborate with business colleagues and other legal teams to develop and implement claims handling recommendations.
  • Provide legal counsel on high-exposure, complex insurance claims and coverage issues during active claims handling.
  • Prepare attorney conditional demand responses.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree.
  • Licensed to practice law and in good standing in the state of practice.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant legal experience.
  • Strong project management skills with a proven ability to coordinate tasks, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across organizational levels and mentor junior team members.
  • Expertise in supporting and advising less experienced colleagues.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and legal research platforms such as LexisNexis.
  • Demonstrated experience in coverage analysis across multiple jurisdictions (preferred).
  • Experience handling complex attorney conditional demands in multiple jurisdictions (preferred).
  • Background in insurance defense or extra-contractual and bad faith litigation.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $112,000 to $190,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
