Overview

A leading distributed retail mortgage lender with over 9,000 employees and more than 700 branches nationwide is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Counsel. This role supports the compliance management program by providing legal analysis and guidance on federal and state regulatory requirements related to mortgage lending. The position involves collaboration across departments to ensure adherence to applicable regulations and enhance compliance operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance on compliance risks and issues to support mortgage origination compliance and operations.
  • Support regulatory examination findings, consumer complaints, and inquiries by conducting system-level research and assisting in response preparation.
  • Assist in developing solutions for regulatory findings, including root cause analysis and remediation.
  • Offer legal guidance on post-close suspense items to facilitate timely clearing of conditions and meet investor delivery timelines.
  • Provide legal support for defects causing critical loan salability issues and coordinate corrective actions cross-functionally.
  • Support compliance related to the use of technology in originations, including loan origination systems, point of sale systems, and proprietary technology.
  • Draft policies and procedures addressing federal and state regulatory requirements, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Serve as a resource for compliance escalations by providing timely legal analysis and practical guidance.
  • Prepare legal research, memoranda, and recommendations on compliance matters for senior counsel and leadership.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mortgage lending compliance.
  • Knowledge of federal and state mortgage lending regulations, including but not limited to Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, QM/ATR, RESPA, TILA, ECOA, HMDA, UDAAP, and SAFE Act.
  • Experience supporting compliance programs within the mortgage lending industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
