Overview
This role supports moderate to complex liability litigation matters within the Staff Legal Office. Under the supervision of an attorney, the Paralegal I, General Liability provides legal and administrative assistance, including case work, research, discovery support, and subpoena-related tasks.
The position is fully remote in California with virtual collaboration.
Responsibilities
- Draft legal pleadings, correspondence, and other documents as directed
- Provide legal support, including legal and documentary research
- Monitor case schedules and filing deadlines
- Conduct interviews; summarize depositions
- Review discovery responses and medical records
- Prepare discovery requests and responses
- Issue subpoenas and collect/organize records from non-parties
- Schedule Surveillance, Compulsory Medical Exams, and Site Inspections
- Assist in trial preparation
- Respond to inquiries and interact with customers, clients, counsel, and witnesses
- Organize and maintain case files and documentation electronically
- Support the team by completing related tasks and participating in assigned projects
- Collaborate with attorneys, staff, claims professionals, and leadership to support litigation outcomes
Requirements
Candidates must meet one of the following California paralegal qualifications:
- Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program; OR
- Certificate from an accredited paralegal program that includes at least 24 semester units of law-related coursework; OR
- Bachelor’s degree or higher and at least one year of qualifying law-related experience under attorney supervision.
- AND
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience in legal support; OR
- Associate Degree and 2 or more years of experience in legal support.
Additional required qualifications:
- Experience conducting electronic database research
- Experience drafting legal documents, correspondence, and/or pleadings
- Experience providing legal support
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate
- Defense experience
- Insurance industry experience
- Ability to effectively conduct electronic database research, including Lexus Nexis
- Comfort working in a paperless environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong Microsoft Office and technical skills
- Familiarity with litigation management software systems
- Trial experience, including preparing trial exhibits and witnesses
- Experience filing with the California Courts E-filing system
- Familiarity with California Rules of Civil Procedure and local Rules
- Experience navigating Clerk, Court and Judicial websites
Compensation & Benefits
- Proposed hourly range: $34.86–45.67
- Short-term incentive bonus eligibility: 5%
- Pay is based on role, location, skills, and experience and follows local laws to ensure fair compensation.
