Overview

A leading legal talent platform is seeking Payments Lawyers to support Canada’s largest in-house banking and financial institutions. This role provides an opportunity to influence major financial operations and contribute to innovation within the rapidly evolving payments sector. Candidates should have 4+ years of relevant experience and a deep understanding of regulations affecting payment systems and services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal counsel directly to business clients on regulatory and transactional matters related to payment systems and services for large financial institutions. Areas include card issuing, ACH payments, mobile payments, card schemes and payment networks, gift cards, B2B payments, and other emerging payment systems.
  • Draft, negotiate, and execute documentation related to cards and payments, including marketing client-facing materials such as Terms and Conditions and contracts.
  • Collaborate with internal business, legal, and compliance teams to analyze and interpret proposed payment-related legislation and regulations, both domestic and international, assessing their impact on current or pending products.
  • Provide legal advice and draft documentation related to payment systems and services.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in-house or at a law firm advising banks, financial institutions, or payment-related corporations.
  • Proven experience providing legal support and analysis on a broad range of payment-related matters including merchant acquiring, card issuing, mobile payments, ACH payments, B2B payments, and emerging payment systems.
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
