Overview
This role involves serving as Privacy Counsel I within a legal team focused on privacy issues. The position requires staying current on data privacy laws and regulations, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and contributing to a fast-paced, efficient legal organization. The Privacy Counsel will report to the Director of Privacy Compliance Programs.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel on privacy assessments and product-related matters
- Develop and contribute to training materials, playbooks, and FAQ libraries to ensure teams have up-to-date privacy guidance
- Serve as a subject matter expert on privacy law, offering practical, strategic, and timely legal advice on data privacy and security
- Monitor and advise on privacy laws, legislative and regulatory developments; lead policy and procedure updates and internal compliance workplans
- Review marketing initiatives to ensure compliance with data protection laws
- Support the overall Privacy Program and risk management processes
- Review, draft, and negotiate privacy and data security terms in contracts with business partners and vendors, including data processing agreements
- Manage vendor privacy aspects, including vendor offboarding
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to a state bar
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant in-house or law firm experience focused on data privacy matters
- Comprehensive knowledge of data privacy statutes, regulations, and guidance such as CCPA, TCPA, CAN-SPAM, and emerging data privacy regulations
- Experience advising on direct-to-consumer product and marketing initiatives from a data privacy perspective
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally on compliance matters
- Experience drafting and negotiating data protection agreements and provisions
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment and handling unfamiliar tasks
- Willingness to lead projects from inception to completion
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the healthcare sector, particularly direct-to-consumer healthcare, is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary ranges vary by office location:
- San Francisco and Seattle: $190,000 - $305,000
- New York: $174,000 - $279,000
- Santa Monica: $158,000 - $254,000
- Other locations: $142,000 - $229,000
- Additional compensation may include annual cash bonuses or commissions and annual equity grants for most positions
