Overview

This role involves serving as a Product Counsel to support the expansion of a rapidly growing product portfolio in the grocery and e-commerce space. The position requires navigating complex and evolving regulatory landscapes to enable product teams to launch new initiatives efficiently and compliantly. The role is remote and currently open to candidates located in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted legal partner for product teams launching in new international markets by identifying jurisdiction-specific risks early and developing scalable compliance frameworks.
  • Provide clear, actionable legal guidance for initiatives involving physical hardware and retailer-facing platforms, enabling product, engineering, and design teams to proceed confidently.
  • Improve cross-functional legal processes by identifying leverage points, introducing AI-assisted workflows, and reducing time-to-answer for recurring legal questions across Product, Business Development, and Operations.
  • Map and proactively manage exposure across consumer protection, payments, privacy, and commercial compliance with documented risk frameworks and clear escalation paths.
  • Foster a legal environment perceived as an enabler rather than a gatekeeper by business partners across the organization.

Requirements

  • J.D. from a top-tier law school with active bar membership in at least one U.S. state.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience at a leading law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Familiarity with legal issues in Internet and e-commerce sectors, including copyright, privacy, advertising, payments, and SaaS.
  • Ability to provide clear, concise legal advice and drive results across multiple teams.
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort working with AI tools to enhance efficiency and streamline legal processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-house legal experience at a technology company or retailer, including secondments.
  • Experience with technology platforms.
  • Background in corporate, pharmaceutical, alcohol, or privacy/data security law, including GDPR and US-EU Privacy Shield compliance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range for Canadian candidates: $185,000 to $195,000 CAD, dependent on permanent work location and candidate experience.
  • Eligibility for new hire equity grants and annual refresh grants.
  • Highly competitive compensation and benefits package aligned with the employee's location.

  • Remote role.
  • Hiring limited to candidates based in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, and Nova Scotia.
