Overview
A technology company operating one of the world’s largest networks is seeking a lawyer passionate about new technologies to join their Product Counsel team. This team serves as the frontline legal contact, addressing complex legal issues related to innovative technology products. The role involves collaborating closely with product, engineering, and business teams throughout the software development and commercialization lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Translate complex legal analysis into clear, actionable guidance for fast-moving product and engineering teams.
- Proactively assess legal risks and advise teams building services that reshape information flow across the Internet and the laws governing it.
- Review and structure legal frameworks for technology transactions, including technology partner agreements, inbound IP licensing agreements, and marketplace arrangements for the developer platform.
- Review marketing event agreements and support promotions and sweepstakes.
- Draft terms of service, disclosures, policies, and related processes.
- Apply privacy-by-design principles and collaborate with the privacy team on data-flow reviews, privacy impact assessments, and other privacy deliverables.
- Solicit invention disclosures, support patent strategy, and protect trade secrets.
- Partner with product and marketing teams on product marketing collateral and claim substantiation.
- Build and refine processes to enable the legal team to scale effectively as the organization expands.
- Engage externally as a subject matter expert on behalf of the organization.
Requirements
- JD degree with strong academic credentials and admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum 3 years of law firm and/or in-house experience, preferably with technology companies; experience with Internet security and infrastructure companies is a plus.
- Strong passion for technology; technical background or expertise is highly desired but not required.
- Experience with copyright law and Internet law (e.g., AI Act, Data Act, net neutrality, DMCA, CFAA) is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills and a cooperative team player who leads with empathy and embraces diverse perspectives.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with lawyers and non-lawyers to establish effective solutions efficiently.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple complex projects; experience with Jira or other project management tools is desirable.
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated annual salary for Bay Area hires: $158,000 - $217,000
- Estimated annual salary for Washington D.C. area hires: $150,000 - $207,000
- Eligibility to participate in the organization's equity plan.
