Overview

This role involves joining the Knowledge Management & Applied Research Team as Product Quality Counsel. You will act as a subject matter expert and product partner—developing expertise in the practice areas supported by the organization, translating that expertise into systems that generate legal work product at scale, and serving as an internal legal resource for teams across the organization.

The ideal candidate is an attorney who prefers helping build the systems that draft legal work product rather than drafting documents by hand. Success in this role requires quickly picking up unfamiliar areas of law, structuring legal reasoning so it can be executed reliably, and explaining those structures to engineers, product managers, and data scientists.

Responsibilities

Help build drafting systems behind AI-generated work product by decomposing expert lawyer reasoning into explicit decision trees.
- Define what each conclusion must be anchored to in the record.
- Refine the logic against real output until it holds up across cases.
Develop working mastery in unfamiliar practice areas on short timelines, including:
- Governing statutory and regulatory framework
- Procedural posture
- Controlling authority
- Evidentiary standards
- Document conventions
Translate legal judgment into product requirements by partnering with Product, Data Science, and Machine Learning teams to convert “what a good lawyer would do here” into specifications, taxonomies, and evaluation criteria that non-lawyers can build against.
Maintain and expand the knowledge base and case-specific templates, including firm and state-level customization in partnership with clients, for personal injury claims today and for additional practice areas as the organization expands.
Conduct legal research on liability and damages nationwide, monitor statutory and common law changes, and mentor the Legal Operations Team on evolving legal standards.
Lead quality assurance efforts through audits, benchmarking, and evaluation development to support model evaluation.
Work directly with clients when needed, walking a firm through how a document was built, gathering requirements firsthand, and relaying what you learn back to the team.
Serve as an in-house legal expert for teams across the organization, advising on substantive questions as they arise and surfacing risk before it reaches a client deliverable.

Requirements

Active license to practice law and in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
5+ years of substantive legal experience, including depth in personal injury litigation across multiple states:
- Statutory and common law frameworks
- First- and third-party bad faith claims involving all types of insurance coverage
- Recoverable damages and their limitations
Demonstrated track record of developing mastery in more than one practice area, including the ability to become the person colleagues rely on for an unfamiliar subject in weeks, not years.
Exceptional legal drafting skills and meticulous attention to detail across all forms of written communication, with experience producing complex documents such as:
- Pre- and post-litigation demands
- Medical summaries
- Written discovery responses
- Legal memoranda
Ability to turn legal knowledge into actionable, unambiguous direction for non-lawyers, including the skill to:
- Explain a doctrinal edge case to an engineer or data scientist in terms they can build against
- Distinguish between instructions that sound clear and instructions that are truly precise
Working fluency with large language models, including practical experience using them in substantive work and a concrete sense of where they fail.
Genuine curiosity and comfort with ambiguity; prioritizing understanding how something works.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Haves)

Describe yourself as AI-native (or similar), with experience building something (script, skill, agent, workflow) without waiting for an engineer.
Comfort using tools such as Claude Code or Cursor.
Comfort in front of clients; while this is not a sales role, you may periodically be the expert in a law firm setting and should be able to be credible and at ease, including when the answer requires further investigation.
