Overview
The Justice Administrative Commission is seeking an Assistant Public Defender for the 10th Circuit, focusing on appellate work. This entry-level position offers an annual salary of $75,000 with competitive raises and a starting date of October 1, 2026. The position is based in Polk County with remote work options available after training is complete. Moving expenses are reimbursable up to $8,000.
Responsibilities
- Represent indigent clients in the appellate process
- Review and analyze client records on appeal
- Identify errors and issues subject to appeal
- Conduct legal research and analyze case law
- Draft persuasive appellate briefs and related documents
- Advocate in appellate courts through oral arguments
- Assist trial attorneys in framing and preserving issues for appeal
- Perform related duties as required
Requirements
- Active membership in good standing with The Florida Bar
- Preferred 2-10 years of related experience, including internships or clinics for recent graduates
- Exceptional research, analytical, and writing skills
- Strong computer skills, including legal research proficiency
- Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and appellate courts
- Skilled in determining appropriate legal strategies and presenting arguments
- Ability to work independently and manage a busy task calendar
