Overview

This internship position offers a hybrid or remote work arrangement.

The organization provides legal services and advocacy to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, focusing on human rights and due process. The team includes over 100 legal professionals and collaborates with a large network of pro bono attorneys.

Responsibilities

Interns and fellows will engage in a variety of immigration-related legal work, including:

  • Assisting with asylum applications and hearings
  • Supporting deportation hearings and appeals
  • Preparing immigrant visa petitions
  • Addressing issues related to unaccompanied immigrant children
  • Assisting detained immigrants
  • Working closely with clients from diverse countries and cultures
  • Potentially appearing in court or observing hearings

Specific internship opportunities for Fall 2026 include:

LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Initiative

  • Provide legal services to low-income immigrants identifying as LGBTQ or living with HIV
  • Conduct client intakes and draft affidavits
  • Perform legal research and draft briefs
  • Prepare applications and communicate with clients
  • Possible court appearances or hearing observations
  • Spanish fluency preferred; other languages considered
  • Experience with trauma survivors and strong project management skills required

Counter-Trafficking Project

  • Provide legal services to survivors of labor and sex trafficking
  • Assist clients with T visa applications and adjustment of status
  • Screen clients for eligibility, draft affidavits, complete USCIS forms
  • Gather country condition information and secondary sources
  • Communicate with clients and draft legal briefs

Immigration Court Helpdesk

  • Provide free legal orientations and limited services to unrepresented individuals in removal proceedings
  • Meet with respondents and prepare immigration filings
  • Assist in-person at Chicago Immigration Court Helpdesk

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in law school
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish required due to regular client communication
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and IT systems

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly wage: $17.05

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain stationary for 50% of the time
  • Occasional movement within the office to access equipment
  • Frequent use of computer and office machinery
