Overview

An international organization is seeking an experienced Regulatory Counsel based in Australia to join their legal team. This role involves leading and implementing the regulatory response and proactive legal engagement strategy for the APAC region, including Australia and New Zealand, with support for other regions as available. The position reports to the Director, Global Regulatory Legal and requires collaboration across the company to advocate effectively on regulatory matters.

This is an international position employed by an international Professional Employer Organization (PEO) and is based in Australia.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement responses to regulatory requests by assessing the impact on the organization, gathering and organizing responsive data, and drafting accurate, compelling responses that meet obligations and advance the organization's interests.
  • Engage with relevant regulatory authorities to present the organization's approach to compliance and cultivate positive working relationships to support long-term engagement and trust.
  • Prepare risk assessments, online safety reports, and other relevant reports for regulatory entities within the region.
  • Monitor new and updated regulations alongside Public Policy and Policy Legal teams to anticipate enforcement risks and support internal legal analyses and strategic positioning.
  • Collaborate with public policy and communications teams on public policy engagement and safety communications strategies, contributing to the organization's narrative.
  • Maintain up-to-date canonical templates for company practices and positions on topics such as privacy, security, and teen safety in coordination with fellow regulatory counsels.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in regulatory legal work related to Internet regulation, including online safety, user safety, minor safety, privacy, data protection, and consumer protection.
  • Licensed to practice law in Australia.
  • Experience working with or for companies in communication/messaging, content, or gaming sectors.
  • Deep knowledge of Australia's regulatory landscape, including platform regulations, privacy rights, data protection, and consumer protection.
  • Familiarity with broader APAC regulatory environments or demonstrated ability to quickly learn regional requirements.
  • Experience preparing and submitting responses to regulatory information requests, risk assessments, and reports.
  • Experience meeting with regulators in Australia and, if possible, in Korea, Japan, and other APAC countries.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Willingness to take on projects of varying sizes.
  • High emotional intelligence, including openness, humility, courage, collaboration skills, flexibility, growth mindset, and kindness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the platform.
  • In-house legal experience at a consumer-facing technology platform.
  • Relevant litigation experience.
