Overview
A leading national retail mortgage lender with over 9,000 employees and more than 700 branches across all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico is seeking a Regulatory Counsel. This role is critical in supporting compliance with federal and state mortgage lending laws, focusing on regulatory change management, new business initiatives, and product development.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal analysis and advice on federal and state mortgage lending laws and regulations to ensure compliance.
- Lead and support regulatory change management by monitoring legal developments, interpreting requirements, and advising on implementation strategies.
- Serve as legal counsel for new and expanded business initiatives, products, and lines of business, assessing regulatory risk and structuring compliant solutions.
- Conduct in-depth legal research and deliver clear, actionable guidance to business and compliance teams.
- Collaborate with Senior Regulatory Counsel and cross-functional teams including Compliance, Operations, Product, and Technology to develop practical solutions to regulatory challenges.
- Translate legal and regulatory requirements into operational controls within loan origination systems (e.g., Encompass) and compliance tools (e.g., Mavent).
- Develop and maintain internal compliance resources, including guidance materials such as a Mavent Compliance Guide.
- Draft, review, and update policies and procedures to reflect regulatory changes, new products, and evolving business practices.
- Identify regulatory risks and compliance gaps, recommending mitigation strategies and process improvements.
- Support internal audits, examinations, and regulatory inquiries by preparing responses and documentation as needed.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant legal or regulatory compliance experience, preferably in banking or the mortgage industry.
- Experience advising on consumer mortgage lending laws and regulations, including TILA/Regulation Z, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, and applicable state laws.
- Experience supporting regulatory change management and/or product counseling in a financial services environment.
- Familiarity with loan origination systems (e.g., Encompass) and compliance tools (e.g., Mavent) is preferred.
- Strong analytical, issue-spotting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide clear and concise legal guidance to diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret complex legal requirements and translate them into practical, operational business solutions.
- Skilled at managing multiple priorities and working effectively in a dynamic, evolving regulatory environment.
