Overview
This role involves providing legal advice on complex issues related to artificial intelligence (AI), privacy, and cybersecurity. The attorney will serve as the primary legal advisor for AI guidance and governance within the organization, offering counsel on responsible AI use, risk management, and compliance throughout the AI lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and provide legal guidance on complex issues involving multiple factors.
- Manage legal matters for various internal stakeholders within assigned practice areas.
- Exercise independent judgment in delivering legal advice with limited supervision.
- Negotiate disputes and review or draft documents and templates within practice areas.
- Serve as the primary legal advisor for enterprise AI governance, including responsible AI, risk management, and regulatory compliance across AI use case intake, development, procurement, deployment, monitoring, and retirement.
- Advise on AI-related risks such as automated decision-making, bias/fairness, transparency, explainability, human oversight, and consumer disclosures; help establish appropriate legal guardrails.
- Negotiate and advise on contracts related to AI, privacy, and cybersecurity, including AI and cloud services, software licensing, data processing agreements, and AI development contracts.
- Develop and maintain governance documentation including policies, standards, procedures, frameworks, playbooks, and approval workflows for AI and privacy use cases.
- Conduct legal research, monitor and analyze proposed legislation, assess operational impacts, and assist business units in understanding requirements.
- Coordinate legal matters handled by outside counsel and provide input on counsel selection.
- Participate in or lead departmental and cross-functional working groups related to legal expertise.
- May manage or mentor junior attorneys or paralegals to scale legal support for AI, privacy, and cybersecurity.
Additional responsibilities may include developing template agreements, delivering training and job aids, advising on AI and privacy impact assessments, responding to regulatory inquiries, and managing litigation or regulatory actions of moderate complexity.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Minimum of five years of relevant legal experience, including significant advising on technology, privacy/security, and AI or automated decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to build, implement, or operate governance programs.
- Licensed or eligible to practice law in the applicable state.
- Certifications such as Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP), AI Governance Professional (AIGP), or comparable credentials.
- Strong written and oral communication skills tailored to the audience.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced environment.
- Agility and adaptability in providing legal advice.
- Extensive knowledge of privacy and security laws and regulations, including HIPAA, GLBA, NY DFS Cybersecurity rules, California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), etc.
- Strong understanding of AI-related legal principles and regulations, such as the EU AI Act, state AI/algorithmic accountability laws (including Colorado), FTC guidance, NAIC AI guidance, and other relevant regimes.
- Comfortable working in a rapidly changing corporate environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or leading an AI governance program in-house, in a regulated industry, or at a law firm advising enterprise clients.
- Experience advising on generative AI use, including prompt governance, output review, human oversight, and intellectual property or copyright considerations.
- Experience conducting third-party AI/vendor due diligence, including security and privacy assessments, audit rights, and model/data ownership terms.
- Experience supporting regulatory inquiries or examinations related to technology, data, AI, or consumer protection.
- Background partnering with data science or engineering teams or prior technical training (coursework, certifications, or equivalent experience).
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $165,000 - $185,000 annually. Actual starting pay depends on qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote), and operational needs. Salary may vary above or below this range as permitted by law.
- Eligibility for an annual bonus based on individual performance and company bonus plans, at the organization's discretion.
Location
- Hybrid work environment requiring three days per week in office.
- Office locations include Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Denver, or Philadelphia.
