Overview
A Fortune 100 insurance and financial services organization is seeking a Senior Counsel specializing in AI and emerging technologies. This role provides expert legal advice to technology, data, and business teams, focusing on the responsible use of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. The position involves regulatory monitoring, emerging technology counseling, and support on technology-related legal matters.
Responsibilities
- Advise business and technology teams on legal issues related to AI and emerging technologies, including development, procurement, deployment, and use.
- Integrate legal and regulatory considerations into AI design, deployment, and lifecycle management.
- Assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risks associated with AI-enabled decision making, addressing fairness, bias, transparency, and accountability.
- Support AI governance and compliance with emerging AI laws, including coordination of independent bias audits.
- Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments related to AI and advanced technologies, translating them into practical guidance.
- Support the operation and evolution of the AI governance framework, including policies, review processes, internal coordination, and third-party auditing.
- Assist in bias analysis using BIFSG methodology and review internal model builds; provide support related to the NAIC AI Systems Evaluation Tool.
- Lead the legal department’s internal AI working group and contribute to training and guidance for business and technology stakeholders.
- Provide legal guidance on technology-related issues such as disaster recovery, operational resilience, website and digital platform accessibility, and review of website terms and conditions.
- Advise on contractor and third-party access to systems and technology.
- Support sanctions-related matters intersecting with technology, vendors, or digital operations.
- Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to ensure aligned and efficient legal advice.
- Serve as a central legal point of contact for AI-related initiatives and emerging technology questions.
- Engage with outside counsel as needed for specialized matters.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
- Fully licensed attorney in good standing, compliant with continuing legal education requirements in the practicing state(s).
- Typically 15 or more years of relevant legal experience, with significant expertise in complex legal matters and project management.
- Experience providing legal counsel on AI, emerging technologies, and technology-related regulatory issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interaction with all organizational levels.
- Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies, and contracts.
- Decision-making skills to set priorities and make recommendations.
- Ability to lead cross-functional projects and complex negotiations.
- Supervisory and leadership experience preferred.

- Experience leading legal teams and managing outside counsel budgets.

Compensation & Benefits
- National salary range: $149,000 to $279,000 annually.
- Expected starting salary range: $149,000 to $249,000 annually.
- Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long-term disability coverage.
- Paid time off starting at a minimum of 18 days per year, nine paid holidays, lifetime paid time off, and Unity Day paid time off.

Location
- This position may be fully remote or hybrid, depending on location.
- Candidates must be located within any of the lower 48 U.S. states.
Additional Information
- The role reports to a Vice President, Associate Vice President, or Managing Counsel and may involve leading a team of legal professionals.
