Senior Counsel (Insurance Defense) — New Jersey
This role requires an active New Jersey Bar license.
The organization is seeking an experienced insurance defense attorney to join and help develop its New Jersey office. The position focuses on complex, high-exposure civil defense matters with meaningful autonomy and access to engaged leadership.
Responsibilities
- Independently handle court appearances, depositions, briefs, and trials
- Manage full case handling responsibilities, including all facets of discovery and trial
- Develop case strategy and maintain ownership of matters to keep cases moving from evaluation through resolution or trial
- Work collaboratively with attorneys across experience levels
- Conduct routine client communications
- Provide leadership and direction to less experienced attorneys
- Cultivate relationships with current and future clients
Requirements
- JD from an ABA approved school
- Active license in your state
- 8+ years of solid litigation experience, specifically with litigation support, deposition and trial preparation
- Experience managing full case handling responsibilities, including discovery and trial
- Strong understanding of New Jersey practice and procedure
- Ability to manage independently with minimal supervision
- Outstanding listening, verbal, and written communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Professional appearance and demeanor
Preferred Qualifications
- At least five years of substantive New Jersey insurance defense experience
- Experience handling insurance defense matters
- Experience using time management systems
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $150,000–$200,000 annually (depending on experience and qualifications)
- Annual billable hours bonus: $10,000, then aggregating with $7,500 for every additional tier
