Overview
A biopharmaceutical oncology organization is seeking a Senior Counsel, Employment to provide legal guidance on a broad range of employment law issues across U.S. and international operations. This role reports to the SVP, General Counsel and supports the company’s clinical studies in oncology.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely legal advice on employment, human resources, and labor matters including hiring, benefits, employee relations, performance management, corrective action, termination, restructuring, leaves of absence, accommodations, and EEOC compliance
- Draft and review employment-related documents such as offer letters, employment contracts, separation agreements, restrictive covenants, employee handbooks, SOPs, and policies
- Collaborate with HR and business leaders to develop business-focused, risk-managed solutions
- Advise and train managers on employment law topics including corrective action, documentation, and performance improvement plans
- Review and negotiate HR and employment agreements including benefits, ERISA, placement, agency/EOR, and employment contracts
- Draft, review, and negotiate general and administrative master service agreements, statements of work, and service agreements related to Finance, IT, Facilities, and leases
- Stay current on employment law developments to provide informed counsel
- Conduct workplace investigations, manage terminations and corrective actions as needed
- Partner with HR to mitigate litigation risks and resolve disputes proactively
- Advise on administration and compliance of retirement benefit plans such as profit-sharing, 401(k), and welfare benefit plans
- Address compliance issues and technical matters related to employee benefit plans
- Manage employment-related claims, litigation, arbitration, agency charges, and oversee outside counsel
- Build trusted relationships with internal stakeholders
- Support global operations on international employment law issues including cross-border compliance and expatriate assignments
- Perform miscellaneous legal tasks or special projects as assigned
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
- Admission to a U.S. state bar in good standing
- Minimum 7+ years of employment law experience, preferably with a national law firm and/or in-house
- Experience defending employment discrimination, EEOC/DOL, and wage and hour claims
- Strong knowledge of employment law, HR policies, and compliance
- Proven litigation and dispute resolution experience
- Excellent legal research, drafting, and writing skills
- Strong negotiation and advocacy abilities
- Excellent organizational and planning skills with attention to detail
- Self-starter capable of working independently and collaboratively
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment with sound commercial and legal judgment
- Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing business environment
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $190,000 to $230,000 annually
- Actual compensation depends on factors such as skill set, experience, certifications, and work location
- Total compensation may include bonus, stock options, benefits, and other variable components
