Overview
This role is for an internal legal counsel position at a high-growth energy startup focused on optimizing renewable energy and grid-scale batteries. The position reports directly to the Chief Commercial Officer and involves building out the commercial legal functions from the ground up. The organization operates remotely with options for hybrid or in-office work in Houston, Cupertino, or San Francisco.
Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate core energy agreements, including renewable and storage power purchase agreements and tolling agreements.
- Manage relationships with outside counsel.
- Manage and negotiate trading frameworks such as ISDAs and EEIs.
- Structure and negotiate retail electric power customer contracts.
- Establish and standardize legal policies, processes, templates, and workflows suitable for a fast-paced environment.
- Collaborate closely with commercial teams to align legal strategy with company goals.
Requirements
- Active, licensed attorney.
- 4 to 10 years of legal experience.
- Strong energy contracting experience, typically gained as an associate at a law firm with a strong energy practice or through in-house roles at power companies or commodities traders.
- Highly autonomous and proactive communicator, comfortable working without an existing legal playbook.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with energy regulatory frameworks such as FERC, ISOs, state PUCs, or CFTC.
- Exposure to energy, trading, investment funds, technology, or startup environments is a strong plus.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $185,000 - $270,000 USD.
