Overview

This role is for a Senior Counsel litigation attorney in Sacramento, California. An active California Bar license is required.

The position involves independently managing litigation matters while remaining closely connected to an engaged local team. The practice focuses on insurance defense and related civil defense matters, with opportunities for substantive case responsibility and trial experience.

Responsibilities

  • Independently handle court appearances, depositions, briefs, and trials
  • Develop and execute litigation case themes
  • Manage matters from strategy through resolution, including discovery, substantive motion practice, client and carrier communication, mediation, expert work, trial preparation, and trial
  • Anticipate next steps, communicate proactively, and keep matters moving without constant oversight
  • Provide routine communications with clients
  • Cultivate relationships with existing and future clients
  • Work as part of a team with attorneys of all experience levels
  • Provide leadership and direction for less experienced attorneys

Requirements

  • JD from an ABA approved school
  • Must be licensed in the State of California
  • 8+ years of solid litigation experience, specifically with litigation support, deposition and trial preparation
  • Ability to manage full case handling responsibilities, including all facets of discovery and trial
  • Experience handling insurance defense matters preferred
  • Experience with time management systems
  • Proficiency in MS Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to think and act independently with minimal supervision
  • Outstanding listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Professional appearance and demeanor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in premises liability, professional liability, personal injury, catastrophic injury, construction, employment, or other substantive civil defense matters

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $160,000–$190,000 annually (depending on experience and qualifications)
  • Annual billable hours bonus: $10,000, then aggregating with $7,500 for every additional tier

  • 401(k): 100% match on the first 3% contributed and 50% match on the following 4–5%
