Overview
A national insurance defense and trial advocacy firm is seeking a Senior Counsel with extensive experience in landlord-tenant litigation to join their Complex Trial Teams. This role involves leading high-stakes, high-impact defense matters involving habitability claims, wrongful eviction disputes, and premises liability cases.
An active bar license in the State of California is required.
Responsibilities
- Develop compelling case themes that effectively counter plaintiff strategies
- Maintain high standards of excellence and refuse to accept mediocrity
- Independently handle court appearances, depositions, briefs, and trials
- Collaborate with team members across all experience levels
- Communicate routinely with clients
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients
- Provide leadership and mentorship to less experienced attorneys
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school
- Active license to practice law in the State of California
- Minimum of 8 years of solid litigation experience, including litigation support, deposition, and trial preparation
- Ability to manage full case handling responsibilities, including all aspects of discovery and trial
- Experience with insurance defense matters preferred
- Proficiency with time management systems
- Skilled in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills
- Professional appearance and demeanor
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated success in defending property owners, insurers, and housing providers in landlord-tenant litigation
- Experience handling complex habitability, mold exposure, wrongful eviction, and tenant injury claims
- Strong courtroom advocacy and strategic litigation skills
- Ability to mentor junior attorneys and guide clients through sensitive, high-stakes cases
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $160,000 to $190,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications
- Annual billable hours bonus starting at $10,000, with additional bonuses of $7,500 for each subsequent tier
