Overview

This role involves providing legal advice, counsel, and services in labor and employment law, partnering with business leaders and Employee & Labor Relations professionals to identify potential legal issues and mitigate employment and labor risks. The position will work directly with Management Services Organizations (MSO) supporting physician practices, medical groups, and provider organizations.

The position is open to candidates based nationwide and operates fully remotely, with a preference for those living within a commutable distance of the corporate headquarters in Central Ohio, though this is not a requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of labor and employment laws, regulations, and principles.
  • Provide legal counsel on labor and employment matters affecting MSOs, physician practices, medical groups, and provider organizations.
  • Advise on physician and advanced practice provider employment agreements and independent contractor agreements.
  • Counsel on physician compensation structures, including productivity-based compensation, wRVU models, incentive plans, quality metrics, and fair market value/commercial reasonableness.
  • Provide guidance on regulatory risks related to physician arrangements, including fraud and abuse considerations and reimbursement environment changes.
  • Draft briefing materials and strategic presentations for department or company leadership regarding labor and employment matters.
  • Advise clients and recommend courses of action on day-to-day employment issues such as hiring, discipline, performance management, and termination.
  • Conduct and lead internal investigations into employee complaints and claims.
  • Collect and organize documents and manage case discovery processes for active litigation matters.
  • Collaborate with internal functional groups including business units, Tax, Treasury, Risk Management, Human Resources, IT, Finance, and other members of the Legal Department.
  • Work directly with outside counsel as needed and manage active litigation matters.
  • Manage a high volume of emails and daily meetings/calls.
  • Issue-spot, evaluate risk, and provide strategic guidance to HR and business leaders considering both legal and business factors.
  • Collaborate with HR and business leaders to build broad-based support and persuade others.
  • Ensure internal clients have a positive experience and meet or exceed internal client expectations.
  • Proactively develop and maintain technical knowledge in specialized areas, staying current on labor and employment laws and best practices.
  • Identify legal trends proactively and propose responsive strategies.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Minimum of 5 years of labor and employment law experience, highly preferred.
  • Experience supporting physicians or physician offices in the healthcare sector, highly preferred.
  • Prior experience with a Management Services Organization in labor and employment law is a significant plus.
  • Excellent verbal communication and writing skills.
  • Experience in a large law firm or corporate legal department preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Anticipated salary range: $123,400 - $158,670.
  • Bonus eligible.
