Overview

This role is a Senior Counsel position supporting an expanding litigation practice in Connecticut. The employer is seeking an experienced trial attorney who wants substantial ownership of cases and the opportunity to contribute to office growth and leadership as the Connecticut practice develops.

Connecticut Bar license required. Admission in New York is highly valued but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop persuasive case themes for defense strategy
  • Handle litigation independently, including court appearances, depositions, briefs, and trials
  • Manage full case responsibilities, including discovery and trial preparation
  • Take and defend depositions
  • Handle substantive motion practice
  • Communicate directly with clients and carriers
  • Work with experts
  • Evaluate exposure and prepare matters for mediation and trial
  • Provide routine communications with clients
  • Cultivate relationships with existing and future clients
  • Lead and direct less experienced attorneys
  • Collaborate with attorneys at all experience levels

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-approved school
  • Must be licensed in your state (active Connecticut Bar license required)
  • 8+ years of solid litigation experience, specifically with litigation support, deposition, and trial preparation
  • Ability to manage full case handling responsibilities, including all facets of discovery and trial
  • Experience handling insurance defense matters preferred
  • Experience with time management systems
  • Proficiency in MS Suite, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Ability to think and act independently with minimal supervision
  • Outstanding listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Professional appearance and demeanor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Admission in both Connecticut and New York would be particularly valuable (dual admission not required)
  • Trial experience is required; comfortable developing matters with trial in mind and taking responsibility when a case needs to be tried
  • Relevant civil defense backgrounds may include:
    • general liability
    • premises liability
    • professional liability
    • products liability
    • medical malpractice
    • employment
    • toxic tort
    • or other complex civil defense litigation
  • Connecticut litigation experience is particularly important, including familiarity with local courts, procedures, and the practice environment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $150,000–$200,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Annual billable hours bonus: $10,000 plus $7,500 for every additional tier

  • 401(k): 100% match on the first 3% contributed and a 50% match on the following 4–5%
