Overview
This role involves defending insured clients and the insurance organization in an ethical and professional manner. The position also supports the house counsel office supervisor with day-to-day office operations.
Responsibilities
- Defend clients in pending litigation throughout assigned state(s), including necessary travel and occasional overnight stays.
- Comply with all State Bar ethical standards and continuing legal education requirements.
- Collaborate and communicate promptly and efficiently with claims legal personnel on all assigned litigation files.
- Maintain pending and closed litigation files professionally and in accordance with house counsel protocols and records retention policies.
- Participate in quality assurance reviews of assigned files and office procedures.
- Assist the Office Supervisor and House Counsel Manager in maintaining and distributing recurring management reports.
- Support the Office Supervisor in training less experienced associate defense attorneys.
- Assist in training paralegals and legal secretaries within the house counsel office.
Requirements
- Membership in the Ohio Bar with at least five years of experience in insurance defense litigation.
- Ability to litigate and defend clients in both state and federal courts.
- Experience defending tort/negligence actions and coverage disputes throughout assigned state(s).
- Knowledge of both personal and commercial lines, with familiarity of the civil litigation market in Northeast and North Central Ohio.
- Thorough understanding of claim values, including bodily injury and commercial claims.
- Comprehensive knowledge of tort/negligence law, civil procedure, insurance contracts, and their interpretation.
- Initiative to improve operations and adapt to the demands of a trial/litigation office and civil trial courts.
- Strong analytical, organizational, legal research, and communication skills.
- Valid Ohio state driver’s license; ability to travel within Northeast/North Central Ohio, all of Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania as required.
- Proficiency with Windows suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and virtual communication tools (Zoom, MS Teams) preferred.
- Experience with commercial insurance policies, defending commercial clients, and litigating commercial liability matters preferred.
- Bar admission in Pennsylvania or ability to obtain Pennsylvania bar admission in the future preferred.
- Ability to work in a paperless environment using Litify case management system and secure AI tools.
- This is a 100% remote position.
