Overview
A leading organization in the Education, Government & Non-Profit sector is seeking a Senior Director / Vice President Deputy General Counsel to join their national office team. This remote role, open to U.S.-based candidates only (no visa sponsorship), involves managing litigation portfolios, providing strategic legal counsel, and collaborating across functions to support organizational priorities.
Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the organization's litigation portfolio, including various civil matters
- Lead internal litigation strategy and coordinate discovery efforts
- Evaluate jurisdictional challenges and recommend early dismissal strategies
- Conduct systemic analysis of litigation trends to identify and mitigate risks
- Provide early risk assessments for emerging disputes before escalation
- Advise executive leadership on governance and operational legal matters
- Negotiate complex contracts, including vendor agreements and partnerships
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent legal training with an active license to practice law in one U.S. jurisdiction
- Minimum of 12 years of legal experience, preferably in nonprofit or regulated environments
- Demonstrated executive presence with the ability to advise senior leadership
- Expertise in employment law and complex contract negotiations
- Strong independent judgment on high-stakes legal matters
- Experience in departmental oversight and strategic planning
- Proficiency in internal and external communications influencing organizational strategy
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with legal analysis tools such as LexisNexis or Westlaw
- Familiarity with contract management software like DocuSign or Concord
- Knowledge of compliance management systems for regulatory coordination
- Use of project management tools (e.g., Asana, Trello) to organize legal workflows
- Understanding of IT and data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)
- Awareness of AI compliance regulations related to AI-enabled tools and automated decision-making systems
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $150,000 – $200,000
