Overview
This role is for a Senior Legal Counsel to support a fast-moving, 100% remote organization with growing legal complexity. You will serve as an in-house legal subject matter expert, partnering with the executive team and cross-functional leaders to lead product legal strategy and execution—especially across privacy, data, AI and compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support.
A key focus is helping the organization respond to an increasing volume of privacy questions—particularly as one of its newer products evolves—by building practical, repeatable systems that provide timely, consistent guidance at scale.
Responsibilities
- Partner with product, sales, finance, security, people operations, and engineering on legal strategy and execution across the product lifecycle.
- Develop and maintain scalable legal guidance systems, including playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service resources for recurring privacy, data-use, and compliance questions.
- Lead GDPR and data compliance vetting and establish a clear process for responding to customer security questionnaires.
- Provide legal support for customer security requirements, including collaborating effectively with security, sales, product, and engineering teams.
- Advise on privacy, data, and compliance initiatives related to AI and data processing.
- Support commercial contracts as the go-to legal contact for contract-related matters.
- Prioritize key legal risks and reduce unnecessary reliance on outside counsel by building durable, repeatable internal workflows.
- Build a “what’s on deck” view of upcoming legal needs and design scalable intake, guidance, and escalation processes.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product (where most of your time will be spent).
- Strong ability to navigate U.S. and European data privacy laws, including familiarity with data controller vs. processor distinctions and how they shape vendor and product decisions.
- Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance.
- Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering with security, sales, product, and engineering teams.
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and the legal, privacy, and customer requirements associated with it.
- Understanding of intellectual property law, especially related to brand, content, and software.
- Understanding of commercial contracts.
- Clear communicator and trusted advisor who can simplify complexity and help others make informed decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company, or experience serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier firm known for work with startups (examples mentioned: Fenwick & West, Cooley).
- J.D. from an accredited law school in the United States.
- Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association.
