Overview
This organization is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to manage legal complexity and support scalable legal operations for a fast-moving tech business with multiple revenue streams, including SaaS, digital commerce, paid recommendations, and advertising. The role is 100% remote, with team members across the globe, and requires the selected candidate to be located in the United States.
You will be the in-house legal subject matter expert partnering closely with the executive team to lead product legal strategy and execution—especially across privacy, data, AI, compliance, commercial contracts, customer security requirements, and scalable legal support.
Responsibilities
- Build practical, repeatable legal systems to provide timely and consistent guidance at scale, with a key focus on privacy questions.
- Partner with Product, Sales, Finance, People Operations, Security, Engineering, and GTM teams across the product lifecycle.
- Lead and improve internal legal workflows to increase speed, confidence, and self-service (e.g., playbooks, templates, intake processes, self-service guidance).
- Serve as the go-to legal partner for product, engineering, security, and go-to-market legal considerations.
- Develop and maintain a “what’s on deck” view of upcoming legal needs and initiatives.
- Take ownership of GDPR and data compliance vetting, and establish processes for responding to customer security questionnaires.
- Reduce reliance on outside counsel by prioritizing major legal risks and building durable in-house processes.
First-week focus
- Get up to speed on business model, current goals, and products.
- Review common legal agreements, privacy questions, and customer security requests to identify risk, opportunity, ambiguity, and recurring work that can be handled more efficiently.
- Meet key internal stakeholders and external counsel.
First-month focus
- Gain ownership and clarity across active data processing, privacy, AI, and other legal initiatives.
- Begin designing scalable intake, guidance, and escalation systems for recurring privacy support questions, particularly related to Subscriber Signals.
- Partner across Sales, Sponsorships, Security, Product, and Engineering to move faster without cutting corners.
- Establish a clear process for responding to customer security questionnaires.
First-six-month focus
- Become the go-to partner for legal considerations across the business, particularly for product, engineering, security, and GTM teams.
- Build scalable systems (playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance) for recurring privacy, data-use, and compliance questions.
- Partner throughout product lifecycle initiatives and feature releases with particular attention to Subscriber Signals and the connected ecosystem.
- Streamline legal workflows to reduce unnecessary outside counsel usage.
First-year focus
- Improve legal maturity across privacy, compliance, product counsel, commercial contracts, and security support.
- Establish durable systems that enable teams to answer common questions independently and escalate higher-risk matters appropriately.
- Treat privacy, data, and compliance as strategic enablers while significantly reducing outside counsel reliance for work that can be handled in-house.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in data, compliance, and product.
- Strong ability to navigate U.S. and European data privacy laws (including GDPR and CCPA), including familiarity with data controller vs. processor distinctions and how they shape vendor and product decisions.
- Ability to translate privacy and compliance requirements into scalable playbooks, templates, intake processes, and self-service guidance.
- Experience supporting customer security questionnaires and partnering effectively with security, sales, product, and engineering teams.
- Familiarity with SOC 2 Type II and the associated legal, privacy, and customer requirements (even if you haven’t directly owned a certification process).
- Understanding of intellectual property law, especially related to brand, content, and software.
- Understanding of commercial contracts; you will become the go-to person for these.
- Clear communicator and trusted advisor who can simplify complexity and help others make informed decisions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as in-house counsel at a tech company or serving a tech portfolio at a top-tier firm known for work with startups (e.g., Fenwick & West, Cooley).
- J.D. from an accredited law school in the United States.
- Active member in good standing of a State Bar Association.
Traits
- Strategic thinker who sees legal as a lever, not a blocker.
- Deeply curious and business-oriented.
- Collaborative partner who can navigate conflict productively.

- “How might we” problem-solver who finds creative, business-aligned paths through legal challenges.
