Overview
This is a limited term/fixed term fellowship opportunity ending on June 30, 2028, for a legal professional to support the development and launch of new products for young learners globally. The role focuses on product counseling, privacy compliance, and international regulatory matters related to children's educational products.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary legal partner to the product, engineering, and international programs teams for the Khan Kids product line.
- Provide legal and regulatory guidance throughout the product development cycle, emphasizing privacy-by-design, age-appropriate content, data practices, and responsible AI use in children's products.
- Advise on privacy compliance under COPPA, GDPR (including age-appropriate design requirements), and other regional data protection laws applicable to young users.
- Draft, review, and update terms of service, privacy policies, and parental consent flows for Khan Kids products, including a new English-learning program.
- Analyze tax, business registration, and digital services laws relevant to international market entry.
- Coordinate with local counsel in target jurisdictions to confirm regulatory requirements and obtain market-specific legal advice.
- Develop scalable legal resources such as compliance guides, contract templates, and internal training materials tailored to the product line.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to create legally compliant user experiences that maintain the child-centered spirit of the products.
- Address additional legal matters as they arise with a global perspective.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of legal practice experience advising on consumer-facing websites or applications in global markets.
- JD or LLM from an accredited U.S. law school and active membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar association.
- Proven ability to lead legal work streams independently across product, privacy, and international regulatory matters.
- Deep experience in privacy compliance for consumer products, including designing privacy programs and embedding privacy-by-design principles.
- Expertise in children's privacy laws (COPPA, GDPR, age-appropriate design codes) or a demonstrated commitment to developing expertise in this area.
- Experience navigating international regulatory landscapes and coordinating with local counsel.
- Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable product guidance.
- Strong business judgment with the ability to analyze and communicate risks and develop practical solutions balancing legal and business goals.
- Experience building and maintaining strong cross-functional relationships and influencing stakeholders.
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment with the ability to set priorities and manage ambiguity.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Passion for early childhood education and building products serving young children and families.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural competency and commitment to inclusion and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in privacy or data security (e.g., CIPP).
- Experience with AI governance, responsible AI principles, or regulatory frameworks applicable to AI in consumer or children's products.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary range: $188,000 - $199,750 USD annually for U.S.-based candidates; $254,046 - $269,924 CAD annually for Canada-based candidates.
