Overview
A technology company is seeking an experienced Product and Privacy Lawyer based on the West Coast to join their legal team. This senior individual contributor role involves advising on innovative product and privacy issues within a fast-paced, global technology environment. The role requires significant independence and influence across cross-functional programs without direct reports.
Responsibilities
- Review new products and features, advising on necessary legal changes.
- Develop proactive privacy policies and guardrails for the Product function.
- Collaborate with the Privacy team to advise on US and European privacy laws, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and emerging state privacy regulations.
- Support Product, Engineering, Growth, Brand, Trust and Safety, and other teams to ensure compliance across internal and public-facing initiatives.
- Assist Support and Operations teams with escalations, disputes, and user issues.
- Provide real-time legal advice and clear operational guidance to teams and squads.
- Support privacy operations including Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), data mapping, vendor assessments, and data governance improvements.
- Contribute to cross-functional programs by developing processes, guidance, and scalable policies.
Requirements
- Qualified to practice law in at least one US state.
- 7 to 10 years of post-qualification experience with a strong focus on product counseling and US/EU privacy law.
- Detailed knowledge of GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and broader US and European privacy frameworks, supported by CIPP or equivalent certifications.
- Experience advising on technology products, data flows, and platform operations.
- Strong commercial drafting and negotiation skills, including data protection agreements.
- Experience advising on AI, machine learning features, or data governance programs.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously.
- Self-starter comfortable working autonomously and driving matters forward.
- Strong business judgment and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
- Excellent communication skills to simplify complex legal issues.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, context-switching, and a fast-paced culture.
- Ability to collaborate with global teams and overlap working hours across time zones.
- Periodic travel for team onsite meetings or cross-functional workshops may be required.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience advising on the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, or other European regulatory frameworks.
- Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements including SaaS, licensing, vendor, and data processing agreements.
- Experience advising on marketing initiatives, brand campaigns, creator partnerships, and advertising compliance.
- Experience in payments, e-commerce, online platforms, or the creator ecosystem.
- Experience supporting Trust and Safety, security, or compliance teams.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary targeted at $240,000 - $255,000 for roles based in San Francisco and Los Angeles; final offers depend on location, experience, expertise, and role scope.
