Overview
A legal counsel role is available to provide strategic legal guidance across US operations within the legal and compliance department. This position involves close collaboration with product, compliance, and business teams to ensure adherence to US federal and state regulations. The role supports engagement with regulators and industry groups and is suited for a lawyer who thrives in fast-paced environments and is passionate about establishing legal foundations in the evolving financial technology sector.
Responsibilities
- Advise on compliance and legal issues related to structuring new and existing stablecoin, payments, and card products and features
- Expand product offerings in accordance with regulatory requirements
- Draft and maintain customer-facing legal documents, including Terms of Service, user agreements, and product-specific disclosures
- Manage US regulatory requirements and applications, including state Money Transmitter Licenses (MTLs), virtual currency licenses, and card network compliance obligations
- Monitor and advise on regulatory developments from the SEC, CFTC, FinCEN, CFPB, and state regulators, including emerging federal stablecoin and digital asset legislation such as the GENIUS Act and CLARITY, assessing their impact on US business operations
- Collaborate with product and commercial teams to design compliant product structures for retail and institutional clients, including card program agreements
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements with service providers, partners, and institutional clients
- Ensure robust compliance with US financial services regulations including AML, OFAC, sanctions, Regulation E, and Regulation Z as applicable
- Manage and oversee relationships with US outside counsel, including firm selection, matter scoping, and legal spend management
Qualifications & Skills
- Minimum of 5 years post-qualification experience (PQE)
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to practice in at least one US jurisdiction
- Experience advising on digital assets and payments, gained at a top law firm or in-house
- Knowledge of relevant US financial legislation, regulations, and supervisory frameworks
- Familiarity with regulatory approaches of the SEC, CFTC, FinCEN, and state regulators
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations
