Overview
A fast-growing, venture-backed medical device company focused on advancing treatments for glaucoma is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel. This role is the first dedicated in-house legal leadership position, responsible for managing the legal function across commercial, regulatory, compliance, corporate governance, and employment matters.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary legal advisor on all legal, regulatory, and compliance issues
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of agreements including:
- Commercial and sales agreements (customers, distributors, group purchasing organizations)
- Vendor and supply agreements
- Clinical trial agreements and investigator contracts
- Provide legal guidance on FDA regulatory matters, promotional review, and interactions with healthcare professionals in a medical device context
- Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Clinical teams to ensure compliant commercialization strategies
- Establish and oversee compliance frameworks covering healthcare compliance, anti-kickback statutes, fraud and abuse, and HIPAA
- Support corporate governance activities such as Board materials preparation, investor communications, and strategic transactions
- Advise on employment-related matters in partnership with Human Resources, including policy development, investigations, and risk mitigation
- Track and manage federal, state, and local compliance filings
- Partner with finance to develop risk mitigation strategies and manage insurance coverage
- Support intellectual property strategy in coordination with external counsel
- Manage external legal counsel to ensure quality support and cost efficiency
- Develop scalable legal processes, templates, and policies to support company growth
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school with active bar membership in good standing
- Minimum of 12 years of legal experience, preferably combining law firm and in-house roles
- Prior experience in medical device, biotech, and/or pharmaceutical industries is required
- Strong knowledge of FDA regulations, healthcare compliance, and commercial contracting
- Experience supporting high-growth or venture-backed companies is strongly preferred
- Proven ability to operate as a generalist across multiple legal disciplines
- Strong business judgment with the ability to balance risk and speed in decision-making
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all organizational levels
