Overview
A well-established property casualty insurer with over 170 years of industry presence is seeking a Senior Counsel to join their national legal organization. This role offers the opportunity to independently manage a caseload of higher exposure and complex litigation matters, including major cases and complex claims, depending on the line of business. The position involves delivering high-quality, proactive case handling and mentoring less experienced attorneys.
Responsibilities
- Independently handle a caseload of higher exposure and complex litigation matters, including major cases and complex claims.
- Utilize trial experience to effectively try cases to verdict or negotiate resolutions.
- Conduct advanced legal research and produce strong, persuasive legal writing and presentations.
- Draft substantive pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other legal documents.
- Attend court events, depositions, and other appointments independently.
- Provide in-depth case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claims partners regarding file handling strategies.
- Collaborate with expert witnesses and consultants to develop case strategies, evaluate technical matters, and prepare compelling testimony.
- Build and maintain strong internal and external client and business partner relationships, managing these relationships independently.
- Provide internal and external training, seminars, and legal updates to insured clients and claims partners.
- Mentor other attorneys and legal support staff, providing leadership.
- Initiate special projects and identify opportunities to support office goals and business needs.
- Fully utilize available technology, case management systems, and automation.
- Travel as required to meet business needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
- Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) where representation is required.
- Extensive insurance defense litigation experience.
- Strong trial experience with a proven track record of litigating jury trials and successful courtroom outcomes.
- Advanced oral and written advocacy skills, including demonstrated success in summary judgment and/or appellate matters.
- In-depth knowledge of the bench, bar, local jurisdictional practices, and adversaries.
- Ability to handle hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings independently.
- Valid driver's license required depending on location to attend court and related meetings.
- Strong decision-making and advanced negotiation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness.
- Flexible and agile mindset with willingness to take on evolving challenges.

Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary range: $132,800.00 - $219,100.00, determined by factors including role scope, complexity, location, skills, education, training, credentials, and experience.
