Overview

A technology organization is seeking a Senior Privacy Counsel to join their Legal team. This role involves leading the privacy legal and operational functions, ensuring compliance with privacy laws such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and applicable U.S. state privacy regulations. The position reports to the VP of Legal, Product, Privacy, and AI and offers significant autonomy from the start.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary internal counsel for privacy matters, advising Legal, Product, Engineering, and Commercial teams.
  • Lead privacy operations including maintaining data maps and Records of Processing Activities (ROPAs), conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), managing Data Subject Request (DSR) escalations and breach responses, and overseeing external Data Protection Officer (DPO) relationships.
  • Develop and maintain commercial privacy infrastructure such as Data Processing Agreement (DPA) positions, negotiation playbooks, and sub-processor notification processes to support sales and enterprise customer requirements.
  • Drive privacy-by-design initiatives for the AI developer platform, contribute to AI governance frameworks, advise on AI vendor contracts, and develop processes for handling AI-generated DSRs.
  • Create and implement internal privacy policies on data minimization, retention, and classification, and develop training programs to promote privacy awareness across the organization.
  • Update and manage external-facing privacy documentation including privacy notices, cookie notices, and internal privacy resources.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar admission in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience combining privacy legal counsel and privacy program operations with demonstrated ownership.
  • Proven track record in building or significantly modernizing privacy compliance programs, including gap assessments and remediation leadership.
  • Hands-on experience with GDPR and CCPA/CPRA compliance, including managing DSARs, breach responses, and sub-processor processes.
  • Practical experience using at least one enterprise privacy platform (e.g., Transcend, OneTrust, Osano).
  • Working knowledge of AI systems and data practices sufficient to contribute to AI privacy governance and advise on AI vendor contracts.
  • Experience with B2B or developer-facing products and familiarity with enterprise customer privacy requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building privacy infrastructure in startup or pre-IPO environments or managing under-resourced privacy programs.
  • Collaboration experience with security teams on vendor assessments, incident response, or data governance.
  • Direct experience with the Transcend privacy platform.
  • Certifications such as CIPP/E and/or CIPP/US.
  • Background in open-source, AI, or data science-oriented companies where privacy intersects with platform and product decisions.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $152,500 - $205,500, with annual bonus potential and equity participation.

Compensation is determined by role, level, location, skills, experience, and education. Specific salary details will be provided during the hiring process.
