Overview
This role involves serving as a Senior Product Counsel - Healthcare on the Legal team. You will partner with product teams as their first legal contact, translating how products work into defensible legal positions within the applicable regulatory environment.
Healthcare regulation and privacy are central to the role. As products expand into additional regulated areas, you will also build working expertise across adjacent domains such as payments and financial services regulation.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary healthcare regulatory expert, providing legal analysis and guidance for navigating the complex U.S. regulatory environment for health technology, including:
- HIPAA
- State general and consumer health privacy laws
- Anti-Kickback Statute
- OIG Medicare and Medicaid regulations
- PhRMA codes
- TCPA and CAN-SPAM
- Accessibility
- Card processing and payments regulations
- Other relevant legal areas
- Partner closely with Product to develop a deep understanding of the business and how each product works, advising teams on what is feasible within the regulatory environment.
- Quickly ramp up on new regulated domains as the product footprint evolves.
- Translate regulatory complexity into actionable guidance by partnering with executive, product, engineering, marketing, and sales teams to identify potential regulatory requirements and effective approaches to execution.
- Develop processes that help teams execute based on your guidance in ways that improve speed and efficiency.
- Protect patient data by partnering closely with the Chief Privacy Officer to ensure patient data is never put at risk.
- Strengthen and support the Legal team by contributing to continuous improvement and assisting colleagues in doing their best work.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; JD from a top-tier law school
- 8+ years of healthcare regulatory experience across a combination of a top-tier law firm and in-house companies, preferably high-growth organizations
- Licensed to practice law in your state of residence
- Substantial product counseling experience, including advising product teams on regulated products from concept through launch
Preferred Qualifications
- Significant experience advising product and engineering teams on how to build and ship in a heavily regulated environment
- Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of law quickly and provide practical, defensible guidance
- Ability to balance legal risk with business and commercial considerations
- Strong skill translating complex legal issues and risks into clear concepts colleagues with non-legal backgrounds can act on
- Comfort engaging in dialogue around risk, including having assumptions challenged by internal product owners or outside counsel
- Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a remote environment
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $240,000–280,000 USD inclusive of base salary and variable incentive
