Overview

This role involves serving as the primary legal advisor for investment products, specifically Mercury Treasury and Mercury Invest, which provide business and consumer customers access to non-deposit investment products. The position requires advising across the full product life cycle, including new feature development, drafting disclosures, marketing and customer communications, and operational matters with regulatory impacts.

Responsibilities

  • Own the investment products portfolio and provide legal guidance throughout the product life cycle.
  • Collaborate across product, compliance, risk, engineering, and operations teams to integrate legal perspectives early in the process.
  • Work closely with compliance on regulatory matters, interpreting requirements, pressure-testing approaches, and supporting examination readiness with FINRA and the SEC.
  • Contribute to other legal areas beyond investment products to broaden expertise.
  • Utilize AI tools intentionally to improve legal workflow efficiency.
  • Translate complex regulatory concepts into clear, engaging narratives for internal teams and external audiences.
  • Stay adaptable and continuously learn as regulations and product scopes evolve.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of legal experience, with at least 2 years focused on non-deposit investment products.
  • Familiarity with the Investment Advisers Act, Securities Act, Investment Company Act, Regulation Best Interest, Form CRS/ADV, FINRA rules, and related regulatory frameworks.
  • Preferred but not required: in-house legal experience and exposure to regulatory agencies relevant to investment products.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to tailor messaging precisely for different audiences.
  • Proactive ownership mindset with a willingness to research and resolve unknowns.
  • Strong working knowledge of AI applications in legal roles or financial services and a genuine interest in leveraging AI for efficiency.
  • Additional experience in financial services, payments, or fintech outside of investments/brokerage is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to develop legal perspectives that balance regulatory compliance with scalable, customer-friendly product design.
  • Comfort working in ambiguous situations and interpreting regulations to understand permitted actions.
  • Experience with cross-functional project scoping, product design evaluation, and building operational processes alongside compliance and operations teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits.
  • Target base salary ranges:
    • US employees in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, or the San Francisco Bay Area: $219,000 - $273,800
    • US employees outside these metro areas: $197,100 - $246,400
    • Canadian employees (any location): $207,000 - $258,700 CAD
  • Offers are based on experience, expertise, location, and internal pay equity.

Location

  • Positions available for US employees in New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco Bay Area, and other locations.
  • Canadian employees are also eligible.
