Overview

This role involves providing title insurance underwriting expertise to multidisciplinary product teams developing technology products related to title insurance policies and underwriting processes. The position requires serving as a subject matter expert in title insurance law, coverage, real estate conveyancing law, and real estate transaction pathways. The role collaborates closely with transactional underwriters and legal colleagues handling non-title insurance legal matters.

Responsibilities

  • Lead underwriting vision and strategy for technology or AI-enabled products, including tools that enhance underwriting decision-making, risk evaluation, and operational efficiency.
  • Identify, evaluate, communicate, and manage title insurance, regulatory, operational, and model-related risks associated with AI-enabled underwriting tools.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in underwriting, title insurance, real estate conveyancing, and underwriting workflows to product managers, designers, researchers, engineers, and data science/AI teams.
  • Partner with product, engineering, and data science teams to design and deploy AI-assisted underwriting tools and workflows.
  • Collaborate with legal, compliance, information security, and risk management stakeholders to ensure responsible and compliant use of AI technologies.
  • Serve as a strategic liaison between transaction underwriters and technology teams to align AI-enabled products with real-world underwriting practices.
  • Participate in product strategy discussions and hold a leadership role.
  • Interface with stakeholders across departments to resolve roadblocks to product success.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of market dynamics, competitive threats, and advantages.
  • Translate complex title insurance and real estate concepts into clear ideas for product teams to influence product strategy.
  • Translate complex technology product concepts into clear ideas for transaction underwriters to influence underwriting protocols.
  • Execute tasks and assignments on the product roadmap.
  • Partner with product managers to drive product evolution and priorities.
  • Mentor and train junior product underwriting counsel.
  • Contribute to the development and advancement of product underwriting principles enterprise-wide.

Requirements

  • Law degree required.
  • Admission to law practice appropriate for the position and location.
  • 3-5 years of experience as product underwriting counsel; or 7-10 years of title underwriting or real estate law practice experience with demonstrated aptitude for this role.
  • Understanding of AI-assisted workflows, generative AI tools, machine learning concepts, and automation technologies relevant to underwriting and real estate transactions.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, explainability, consistency, and underwriting applicability.
  • Superior verbal and visual communication skills.
  • Deep understanding of land titles, real estate law, and conveyancing processes.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state laws related to title insurance and settlement services.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and adaptability regarding emerging technologies and digital transformation.
  • Strong business acumen and strategic agility to influence outcomes and negotiate resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex concepts across the organization and to large audiences.
  • Proven track record of designing, developing, and executing complex projects.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $129,300.00 - $172,300.00 annually.
  • Pay is based on factors including job-related knowledge, skills, experience, business requirements, and geographic location.
