Overview
This role involves providing title insurance underwriting expertise to multidisciplinary product teams developing modern technology products that involve or affect title insurance policies or underwriting processes. The position serves as a subject matter expert in title insurance law, title insurance coverage, real estate conveyancing law, and real estate transaction pathways. It requires collaboration with transactional underwriters and legal colleagues responsible for legal issues outside title insurance coverage.
Responsibilities
- Lead underwriting vision and strategy for technology or AI-enabled products or product lines, including tools that enhance underwriting decision-making, risk evaluation, and operational efficiency.
- Identify, evaluate, communicate, and manage title insurance, regulatory, operational, and model-related risks associated with technology or AI-enabled underwriting tools.
- Provide subject matter expertise in underwriting, title insurance, real estate conveyancing, and underwriting workflows to product managers, designers, researchers, engineers, and data science/AI teams.
- Partner with product, engineering, and data science teams to design and deploy AI-assisted underwriting tools and workflows.
- Collaborate with legal, compliance, information security, and risk management stakeholders to ensure responsible and compliant use of AI technologies.
- Serve as a strategic liaison between transaction underwriters and technology teams to align AI-enabled products with real-world underwriting practices.
- Participate in product strategy discussions and hold a leadership role.
- Interface with stakeholders across departments to resolve roadblocks to product success.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of market dynamics, competitive threats, and advantages.
- Translate complex title insurance and real estate concepts into clear ideas accessible to product team members to influence product strategy.
- Translate complex technology product concepts into clear ideas accessible to transaction underwriters to influence underwriting protocols.
- Execute tasks and assignments on the product roadmap.
- Partner with product managers to drive product evolution and priorities.
- Mentor and train junior product underwriting counsel.
- Contribute to the development and advancement of product underwriting principles throughout the enterprise.
Requirements
- Law degree required.
- Admission to law practice appropriate for the position and location.
- 3-5 years of experience as product underwriting counsel; or 7-10 years of title underwriting or real estate law practice experience with demonstrated aptitude for the role.
- Understanding of AI-assisted workflows, generative AI tools, machine learning concepts, and automation technologies relevant to underwriting and real estate transactions.
- Ability to evaluate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, explainability, consistency, and underwriting applicability.
- Superior verbal and visual communication skills.
- Strong understanding of land titles, real estate law, and conveyancing processes.
- Strong understanding of federal and state laws related to title insurance and settlement services.
- Demonstrated curiosity and adaptability regarding emerging technologies and digital transformation.
- Strong business acumen and strategic agility to influence outcomes and negotiate for resources.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex concepts across the organization and to large audiences.
- Proven track record of designing, developing, and executing complex projects.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $129,300.00 - $172,300.00 annually.
- Pay is based on factors including job-related knowledge, skills, experience, business requirements, and geographic location.
