Overview

Settlement Attorney (DBA and Federal Workers’ Compensation)

Responsibilities

  • Assess settlement readiness by reviewing liability, medical evidence, disability exposure, compensation history, vocational issues, litigation risk, and client objectives.
  • Develop settlement valuations and negotiation strategies in collaboration with the handling team.
  • Counsel clients regarding settlement structure, legal effect, risks, tradeoffs, and required documentation.
  • Negotiate with opposing counsel, carriers, and other stakeholders to pursue favorable and practical resolutions.
  • Draft or review settlement agreements, releases, stipulations, fee documents, and supporting submissions for accuracy and consistency.
  • Coordinate Section 8(i) settlement packages and related requirements, including necessary forms, signatures, supporting records, and approval submissions.
  • Identify missing documents, calculation discrepancies, Medicare-related issues, or language that could delay approval or adversely affect the client.
  • Track matters from mediation or agreement in principle through execution, submission, approval, payment, fee receipt, and case closure.
  • Respond promptly to returned or deficient settlement packages and coordinate corrections with the appropriate team members.
  • Maintain clear status documentation and communicate delays, approvals, payment issues, and next steps to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with litigation attorneys to ensure settlement positions reflect the complete evidentiary and procedural record.
  • Use firm-approved workflows to improve settlement throughput while personally verifying all material terms, calculations, filings, and client communications.

Requirements

  • Active bar admission and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Strong negotiation, legal analysis, drafting, document review, and client-counseling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large volume of matters, follow-ups, and detailed documentation.
  • Exceptional accuracy with settlement terms, calculations, deadlines, and execution requirements.
  • High integrity, discretion, reliability, and commitment to client service.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate consistently in a fully remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DBA, NAFI, Longshore Act, workers’ compensation, administrative claims, personal injury settlements, or structured resolution work.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing Section 8(i) settlements and related approval packages.
  • Experience with mediation, settlement conferences, carrier negotiations, and post-settlement payment follow-up.
  • Experience working with Medicare-related settlement considerations and electronic case management systems.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $150,000–$200,000.
  • Fully remote, full-time position.

Location

  • Remote (fully remote position).
  • Attorneys are expected to be available during standard business hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday.
