Overview

This senior legal position involves leading the development and implementation of legal strategies related to healthcare law within the organization. The role reports to the Deputy Chief Compliance and Legal Officer and serves as the primary legal business partner to leaders in Provider Services, Medical Management, Claims, and the Chief Network Officer. The position includes supervising attorneys and staff, managing healthcare-related legal matters, and negotiating provider contracts and network subcontractor agreements.

This is a remote position with a preference for candidates located in the Phoenix area. Remote work is available for residents in AK, AR, AZ, CO, FL, HI, IA, ID, IL, KS, LA, MD, MN, MO, MT, NE, NV, NM, NC, ND, OK, OR, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA/DC, WA, WI, and WY only. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a favorable Department of Defense background investigation are required due to the organization's Department of Defense contract.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Healthcare Law unit, developing and implementing legal strategies for healthcare-related matters.
  • Plan and assign work, hire, supervise, and evaluate legal staff to ensure high-quality legal representation.
  • Provide legal advice and business judgment to healthcare leadership teams.
  • Manage and mentor legal staff, including performance management and professional development.
  • Report legal risks and issues related to healthcare law to senior compliance leadership.
  • Oversee healthcare-related litigation, including coordination with outside counsel.
  • Conduct legal research, identify emerging risks, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Develop and review provider contracts, business associate agreements, and other healthcare-related documents.
  • Advise on regulatory healthcare matters including Medicare, Medicaid, federal healthcare program participation, anti-kickback laws, self-referral laws, HIPAA, fraud and abuse, and corporate transactional matters.
  • Assist departments and committees on health law issues such as fraud and abuse, privacy, security, and peer review privilege.
  • Participate in internal committees related to peer review, quality, and credentialing programs.
  • Support training and implementation efforts to ensure legal compliance.
  • Review and revise company policies and procedures.
  • Advise senior leadership on legal implications of company actions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 15 years of legal experience in healthcare law or a related field.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain a favorable interim and final Department of Defense background investigation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience advising managed care administrators, health plans, or healthcare providers.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA, False Claims Act, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, and other healthcare-related laws and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of government-funded healthcare programs.
  • Familiarity with Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Defense (DoD) healthcare programs.
  • Prior experience with federal government contracting.

Working Conditions

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range typically between $247,500 and $275,000 annually, varying by role and location.
