Overview
The organization is seeking an experienced Senior Coverage Counsel to join its National Claims Counsel team. This full-time, exempt role offers flexibility to work remotely or from the Worcester, MA office.
In this position, you will serve as legal counsel to the claims organization, focused on providing legal opinions, advice, and resolution strategies on coverage and extra-contractual issues arising from the organization’s insurance policies and coverage positions.
Responsibilities
- Research and provide legal advice and coverage opinions to claims handlers on coverage issues arising from insurance contracts, including:
- Auto and general liability
- Specialty lines (e.g., management liability & professional liability)
- First party property and marine coverages
- Prepare timely, appropriate, and actionable coverage opinions/advice on selected high complexity/high exposure claims
- Partner with claims handlers to develop strategies that optimally resolve coverage disputes
- May manage selective coverage litigation brought by or against the organization, including:
- Declaratory judgment actions
- Extra-contractual bad-faith and other coverage-related disputes
- Review and approve proposed coverage actions brought on behalf of the organization
- Collaborate with underwriting and product areas to improve the organization’s insurance products
Requirements
- Significant experience preparing coverage opinions on property casualty insurance policies either in a law firm or in-house for a property and casualty insurer (required)
- Experience litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes either in private practice or in-house for a property and casualty insurer (a plus)
- 10 or more years of experience in practicing law in a law firm or in-house, with a substantial portion involving property & casualty insurance coverage matters
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team framework
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate actionable legal advice
- Computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook and keyboarding skills
- Familiarity with legal principles and issues concerning E-Discovery
- JD degree or equivalent
- Admitted to practice in at least one US jurisdiction
- Strong time management and organizational skills

- Experience litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes (private practice or in-house for a property and casualty insurer)
