Overview
This role involves serving as Senior Privacy Counsel focused on product development within a fast-paced technology environment. The position requires embedding with engineering and product teams to provide privacy-by-design guidance from early feature conception through launch. The counsel will manage privacy issues related to consent, data collection, international transfers, AI features, and third-party integrations.
Responsibilities
- Act as the primary privacy advisor for product development, participating throughout the product lifecycle
- Review new features and data practices for privacy implications and provide actionable guidance
- Advise on consent flows, cookie and tracking implementations, and user privacy controls
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to design privacy-compliant AI-powered and data-driven features
- Conduct privacy reviews for integrations, partnerships, and third-party data sharing
- Provide day-to-day counseling on GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other US state privacy laws
- Monitor emerging global privacy regulations and translate requirements into practical guidance
- Advise on TCPA, CAN-SPAM, and marketing compliance as related to product functionality
- Support HIPAA compliance efforts where applicable
- Coordinate with legal experts to deliver consistent guidance to product teams
- Build strong relationships with product managers, engineers, and designers to facilitate shipping better products
- Translate legal requirements into actionable language for product teams and risk assessments for leadership
- Work with Privacy Program Manager to implement privacy-by-design frameworks
- Partner with commercial counsel on customer privacy commitments and data processing agreements
- Continuously improve privacy review processes for efficiency and earlier issue detection
- Develop scalable intake processes, templates, and guidance for routine privacy questions
- Identify opportunities for automation in privacy workflows
- Serve as escalation point for complex privacy-related customer inquiries
- Collaborate with customer success and support teams to develop frontline privacy guidance
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active bar admission in at least one US state
- Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/E or CIPP/US)
- Minimum 8 years practicing privacy law with significant product counseling experience in technology or SaaS
- Experience advising on AI/ML features, automated decision-making, or data analytics products
- Strong knowledge of GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other major US state privacy laws
- Proven ability to provide thorough, risk-calibrated advice that supports business decisions
- Demonstrated success building productive relationships with product and engineering teams
- Effective communication skills for customer-facing privacy matters
- Proficiency with AI-powered tools to enhance legal guidance efficiency and quality
- Ability to work independently, make informed judgments with incomplete information, and operate autonomously
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain complex privacy concepts to non-lawyers
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house experience at SaaS, marketing technology, or B2B platform companies
- Experience supporting IPO readiness or working in a public company environment
- Familiarity with TCPA, CAN-SPAM, and marketing compliance
- Experience developing or improving privacy review processes and workflows
- Exposure to HIPAA compliance in a technology context
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $176,000 - $246,000 annually
