Overview
This role is fully remote but requires the candidate to be based within the UTC +3 to -5 time zones. The organization is seeking a Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary to lead its global Legal and Compliance function. This senior legal leadership position reports directly to the CEO and involves managing a large, distributed team of over 35 legal professionals across multiple time zones.
Responsibilities
- Develop and own the global legal strategy and risk posture, aligning legal priorities with company strategy.
- Serve as the principal legal advisor to the CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors, including governance and corporate secretary duties.
- Lead, scale, and develop a global legal team, including hiring, organizational design, performance management, and leadership development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Revenue, Finance, Operations, and People teams to ensure responsible product development and scaling.
- Provide global employment and labor law advisory, particularly in the Employer of Record (EOR) context, managing escalations, claims, disputes, and outside counsel.
- Lead commercial legal strategy for enterprise deals and strategic partnerships, including creating playbooks and negotiation frameworks.
- Oversee Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and BCorp compliance and thought leadership efforts.
- Provide legal guidance on AI, data protection, privacy, and trust in partnership with Security and Compliance teams.
- Build scalable legal infrastructure such as templates, self-service guidance, intake and triage processes, service level agreements, knowledge management, and performance metrics.
- Continuously improve Legal team operations, including efficiency gains and integration of AI solutions.
- Manage outside counsel and legal vendors, including selection, scoping, budgeting, invoice review, and performance evaluation.
- Support corporate matters such as entity management, subsidiaries, financing, mergers and acquisitions, and regulatory interactions.
- Advocate for the EOR industry through participation in industry groups and directing government affairs and regulatory agendas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent legal qualification, admitted to practice in one or more jurisdictions.
- Minimum of 5 years experience as General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, or equivalent in a corporate legal department.
- At least 10 years post-qualification experience practicing law.
- Proven experience building and managing distributed legal teams.
- Experience working in a remote work environment.
- Ability to handle complex legal issues involving multiple countries' laws, including employment and global workforce matters.
- Strong ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and research skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to assist others regardless of task size.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-output, team-oriented, and practical environment.
- Reliable home internet connection.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following areas is beneficial:
- Advising Employer of Record (EOR), Professional Employer Organization (PEO), HR technology, payroll, fintech, or regulated SaaS companies.
- Advising scaling, multi-jurisdictional organizations.
- Advising multinational organizations on cross-border compliance issues.
- Acting as corporate secretary.
- Lobbying or government affairs experience.
- Experience with privacy programs, security/compliance, or other control frameworks.
- Familiarity with legal operations tools such as contract lifecycle management (CLM), matter management, e-billing, knowledge systems, and AI-enabled workflows.
