Overview

This role is for a Tax Attorney – Tax Controversy at a boutique tax controversy law firm. The position is full-time and fully remote, with the requirement to work Pacific Time hours.

The base salary range is $140,000–$180,000, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Represent individuals and businesses in federal and state tax controversy matters.
  • Communicate and negotiate directly with the IRS and state taxing authorities.
  • Handle tax resolution matters, including Offers in Compromise, Installment Agreements, Penalty Abatement requests, and related issues.
  • Conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda, correspondence, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Manage client matters from initial consultation through final resolution.
  • Develop legal strategy with an experienced tax controversy team.
  • Build trusted client relationships and guide clients through complex tax matters.

Requirements (Must-Have)

  • Active U.S. Bar license (California preferred, but not required).
  • 5+ years of tax experience with hands-on background in tax controversy and tax resolution.
  • Hands-on experience with IRS collections and resolution matters, including Offers in Compromise, Installment Agreements, Appeals, and/or similar matters.
  • Experience representing taxpayers before the IRS.
  • Experience handling federal tax controversy and tax resolution matters.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage matters independently while working remotely during Pacific Time business hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Tax Controversy.
  • IRS Collections and IRS Appeals.
  • Offers in Compromise and Installment Agreements.
  • Penalty Abatement.
  • Federal tax disputes.
  • Experience with California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and/or CDTFA.
  • Boutique tax law firm experience.

Strong Alternative Backgrounds

  • Tax resolution.
  • Tax litigation.
  • U.S. Tax Court.
  • Government tax controversy experience combined with private practice.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $140,000–$180,000 (depending on experience).
  • Compensation will be based on experience, background, and overall qualifications.

Location

  • Fully Remote — Must work Pacific Time hours.
