Overview

A boutique California tax law firm is seeking a Tax Paralegal to support complex tax matters for small business clients. The role involves handling audits, collections, appeals, Tax Court proceedings, and disputes before agencies such as the IRS, FTB, CDTFA, and EDD. This is a fully remote, engagement-to-hire position with a strong expectation of permanent conversion. While candidates residing in Southern California are preferred, all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

This position requires ownership of a caseload, managing matters from intake through resolution with minimal supervision. The paralegal will communicate directly with clients and tax agencies and collaborate closely with attorneys on substantive tax controversy work.

Responsibilities

  • Manage tax controversy case files end-to-end, including new file setup, deadline and budget tracking, retainer and accounts receivable management, and case closing
  • Support a variety of matter types such as IRS and state collections, income tax audits (IRS/FTB), employment tax audits (EDD), sales tax audits (CDTFA), innocent spouse claims, appeals, and Tax Court proceedings
  • Obtain agency Powers of Attorney and retrieve and review account transcripts, Wage & Income Transcripts, and related agency records
  • Review tax returns, financial statements, general ledgers, and other financial documents; complete bank deposit analysis, financial analysis, audit, and sales tax workpapers
  • Draft IRS forms including 433-A, CDP requests, penalty abatement requests, appeals, Tax Court petitions, FOIA, and Taxpayer Advocate Service requests using firm tax tools
  • Conduct legal and factual research using AI-assisted and traditional research platforms; draft memos for internal and client use
  • Communicate directly with clients and tax agency personnel to coordinate document gathering, provide status updates, and follow up on agency requests
  • Assist with scheduling and attend strategy meetings with clients and responsible attorneys

Requirements

  • 3 to 7 years of relevant experience in tax, paralegal, or accounting environments
  • Comfortable working with financial data such as tax returns, account transcripts, financial statements, and general ledgers
  • Direct experience interacting with IRS, FTB, CDTFA, or EDD strongly preferred
  • Prior experience drafting IRS forms (433-A, CDP, penalty abatement, appeals) is a strong plus
  • Enrolled Agent (EA) license is strongly preferred but not required
  • Highly organized and process-oriented, with a natural reliance on systems, checklists, and workflows to manage deadlines and case stages
  • Proven ability to work independently and manage a caseload in a fully remote environment, with comfort in ownership and accountability over close supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable engaging directly with clients and tax agency personnel
  • Proactive and fast-moving, taking initiative to advance matters without waiting for direction
  • Paralegal certificate preferred; equivalent experience considered
  • Outstanding references

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $70,000 - $100,000 annually, plus performance-based bonuses
  • Pay is based on factors including work experience, qualifications, credentials, location, and market supply/demand
