Overview
A state medical regulatory board is seeking a Staff Attorney (Attorney I) to join their Pre-Investigations Department. This is a full-time exempt position with a monthly salary of $6,890. The role is fully remote but requires residency in Texas. The position is part of a career ladder with advancement potential to Attorney II upon meeting performance and experience requirements.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate new complaints received by the agency, including administrative violations, criminal history reports, and self-reports, to make preliminary determinations regarding potential violations of the Occupations Code or applicable rules.
- Collaborate closely with other departments and coordinate with the Section Supervisor, Investigations Director, and Deputy Executive Director - Operations.
- Draft Warning Letters, remedial plans, orders, and other settlement documents.
- Track pre-investigation cases for reporting to the Board.
- Review initial complaints regarding unlicensed practice of medicine.
- Review evidence such as statements, websites, and responses; draft settlement documents.
- Prepare evidence and applications for review by the Litigation department.
- Assist with drafting surrender/revocation orders, cancellation, and retirement documents for licensees under active investigation.
- Review advertising, billing, and registration cases involving arrests, impairment, or disciplinary actions.
- Serve as backup to the Attorney Complaint Reviewer and perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited law school with an L.L.B. or J.D. degree.
- Licensed in good standing to practice law in Texas or a candidate for admission to the Texas Bar in 2026. Continued employment is dependent upon obtaining the license prior to December 31, 2026.
- Must reside in Texas.
- No dual-state employment with another state agency or higher education institution is allowed.
- Must disclose any outside employment to avoid conflicts of interest.
- Provide date of birth for background check.
Preferred Qualifications
- Litigation experience in administrative, regulatory, or health law, or prosecutorial experience.
- Knowledge of legal principles and practices related to licensing and regulation of professional licensees.
