Underwriting Counsel

Overview

This role involves managing legal risk and decision-making related to real estate transactions and litigation. The position requires representing plaintiffs and defendants in civil cases and overseeing all phases of litigation, including investigation, pleadings, discovery, pre-trial, trial, settlement, and appeal.

Responsibilities

• Review and evaluate title searches and insurance risk factors.
• Justify and communicate underwriting requirements to counsel for buyers, sellers, and lenders.
• Evaluate risk and exposures to determine business acceptability.
• Determine premiums, terms, and conditions based on established rules, rates, and guidelines.
• Analyze data such as financial conditions, participation percentage, industry type, employee group characteristics, or past claim experience.
• Perform a range of assignments and potentially lead projects within the discipline.
• Apply knowledge of business and best practices, understanding key business drivers and integration within the organization.
• Work within broad guidelines and policies to accomplish objectives and goals.
• Solve moderately complex to complex problems using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.
• Explain complex or sensitive information clearly.
• Act as a resource and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
• Function as an individual contributor with limited oversight.
• Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred.
• Typically requires 2+ years of related work experience.
