Overview

A legal staff counsel position is available for a Workers' Compensation attorney in a fully remote role based in the San Diego, California area. This role involves handling litigation arising from claims against policyholders or the organization, managing cases from inception through trial and appeal. The position focuses on delivering high-quality, proactive case handling primarily involving low to moderate complexity matters.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of predominantly low to moderate complexity.
  • Apply litigation skills and techniques to try cases to verdict or negotiate resolutions.
  • Conduct legal research and produce strong, persuasive legal writing and presentations.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other legal documents.
  • Attend court events, depositions, and other appointments independently.
  • Provide case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claim partners regarding file handling strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients and business partners.
  • Offer advice and training to claim partners and clients.
  • Utilize available technology, case management systems, and automation effectively.
  • Travel as required to meet business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • At least 3 years of insurance defense litigation experience.
  • Experience independently handling cases from inception through trial/hearing and appeal.
  • Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) where representation is required.
  • Regularly handles hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings.
  • Valid driver's license as required for travel to court or meetings.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present information on litigated matters to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong legal research skills and proficiency with technology.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail, urgency, and responsiveness.
  • Sound decision-making and strong negotiation skills.
  • Flexible and agile mindset with willingness to take on new challenges.
  • Skilled in fostering collaborative relationships to deliver exceptional customer service.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual base salary range: $106,300.00 - $175,400.00, determined by factors including role scope, complexity, location, skills, education, and experience.
  • Eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.
  • Health insurance coverage available from the first day of employment for employees and eligible family members.
  • 401(k) plan with dollar-for-dollar matching up to the first 5% of eligible pay, subject to annual maximum.
