Overview

An organization is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel, Commercial to lead the legal function with a focus on commercial contracts, sales, corporate matters, employment, dispute resolution, and international market access. This role also involves providing commercial guidance to leadership to drive meaningful P&L value by balancing legal risks and business opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of the legal team, managing risk while supporting rapid business growth
  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements with customers and partners, aiming for efficiency and mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Sales, Supply Chain, Go-to-Market, and Marketing to maximize return on investment
  • Support initiatives related to product and market launches, pricing strategies, go-to-market motions, and customer lifecycle management
  • Translate legal requirements related to information security, technology, regulatory compliance, and other areas across various departments
  • Advise founders and executive leadership on legal matters and act as a trusted advisor on risk management

Requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of legal experience
  • At least 4 years focused on commercial legal work
  • 2+ years in-house experience at a technology company preferred, especially in B2B startups
  • Proven track record or demonstrated potential for executive leadership
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from a reputable law school; STEM degree is a plus
  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations and make timely, sound decisions
  • Strategic mindset prioritizing business outcomes over pure legal risk mitigation
  • Strong dispute resolution skills with high empathy
  • Positive attitude, sense of humor, and ability to enjoy work
  • Strong drive to build a category-defining business
