Overview

An organization in the Austin, Texas area is seeking an Assistant to General Counsel to support legal and compliance functions within a full-service title, settlement, underwriting, and vendor management services company serving residential and commercial real estate transactions.

Responsibilities

  • Draft indemnities, curative instruments, affidavits, contracts, and other transactional documents for review and approval by General Counsel.
  • Review and annotate vendor agreements, office leases, and other third-party contracts.
  • Support company regulatory compliance efforts, including FinCEN real estate reporting.
  • Prepare draft responses to Department of Insurance (DOI) and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaints.
  • Conduct legal research and assist with legal analysis for employee training materials and presentations.
  • Manage the General Counsel’s calendar, appointments, and meetings.
  • Maintain and update legal and educational resources on the shared company network.
  • Review proposed litigation filings, track company litigation matters, and coordinate with outside counsel as directed.
  • Attend depositions, hearings, and similar legal proceedings as a company representative and report outcomes to General Counsel.
  • Coordinate and prepare document production in response to subpoenas, summons, or similar legal requests.
  • Maintain and update company legal forms in escrow software.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-approved law school preferred.
  • Licensed to practice by the Texas State Bar preferred.
  • For non-attorneys:
    • Paralegal experience drafting corporate and/or transactional documents.
    • Legal research experience supporting litigation.
    • College degree or equivalent.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and legal research tools such as Westlaw or equivalent.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong legal research and analytical abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
