Overview
This role is remote in the United States, with a preference for the East Coast. The Associate Counsel, Employment will serve as a trusted legal advisor on employment and labor-related matters, including employee relations, recruiting, benefits, people operations, disputes, policies, and related responsibilities.
Reporting to the Senior Counsel, Employment, this position partners with multiple business functions, including People, Information Security, Sales, Marketing, Finance, Product, and Content, to support high-growth objectives.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal and strategic advice on global employment matters, including employee relations, terminations, compliance, background screenings, benefits, immigration, recruiting, compensation, and other related issues.
- Assist in managing employment-related disputes, complaints, litigation, and investigations.
- Draft, negotiate, and review employment-related agreements, addenda, and amendments.
- Partner with the People team in the development of people policies.
- Advise on the use of AI technology in employee relations, recruiting/hiring, and other employment processes.
- Stay current on the shifting legal landscape of global employment laws, regulations, and industry guidance.
- Help create and enhance playbooks to scale the legal function as the organization grows.
- Work effectively in a dynamic environment across different functional groups and time zones.
Requirements
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to, and good standing with a state bar.
- Minimum of 3+ years’ experience advising clients on employment and labor-related matters either in-house or with a nationally recognized law firm (or a combination of both).
- Knowledge of employment laws and regulations including Title VII, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family and Medical Leave Act, Equal Employment Opportunity laws, wage and hour laws, background check laws, benefits laws, immigration, and other international, federal, state, and local laws.
- Strong business acumen, with a responsive, business-friendly, and pragmatic approach to legal work while balancing legal risk.
- Effective negotiation skills, including the ability to support difficult positions in a firm and patient manner.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with internal and external professionals across backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
Compensation & Benefits
- Base compensation range: $145,000—$165,000 USD
- Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience/expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
- Performance-based bonus, equity, and a generous benefits program may also be offered.
